I'm curious...

How many folks on this board follow the tourism industry in this province? How long for? Other provinces? Their relation to each other? The country-as-a-whole's? Its relation to the rest of the planet? The planet relative to its solar system? That solar system relative to its galaxy? That galaxy relative to its outer space(s)?

Etc, etc, etc...

(just trying to encourage expansion of perspective)

"it has been the authorities, the political, religious, educational authorities, who attempted to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations, in-forming, forming our minds, with their view of reality... to think for yourself, you must question authority, and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable open mindedness, chaotic, confused, vulnerability, to inform yourself..."
Have a nice trip!

Vacant Pate

Every 'new' dollar which goes into circulation as a result of the oly will be carried on the back of at least 20 tax dollars and so, is no benefit to anyone at all save vanoc which should use as it's symbol, not interlocking coloured condoms, but a huge phallus.

If it doesn't meet with their dogma, I doubt many do.

Badly Needed here...........All economic wealth and activities regardless of origin create a chain reaction throughout the Entire Economy.

To say that Economic Benefits from the Olympics are confined to the Place of origin is to Claim that the Oil and Gas Industry is of Benefit to Calgary only.

It is a fact that the Alberta Oil And Gas Industry has had a direct ECONOMIC effect on the ENTIRE COUNTRY....................hence the ability of the BC Government to offer incentives to the Public sector as a result.

As for the Olympic Issue.....................Airlines will cash in on the economic benefits long before anybody even arrives at Whistler.I dont have time to write a Book on it but I havent mentioned Car Rental agencies and Hotels yet either.

Again......................There is no such thing as Economic Activity in Isolation...........................even if a $20.00 bill that ends up in Fort St John doesnt have Olympics and Whistler stamped all over it.

Complete denial

It doesn't matter...the government would be far better off just sending the tax dollars to Ft St John, it would cost less that the olympics will.

You are just like someone who pays off one credit card with another, can't see the reality.

Nope.....................All kindsa New money coming into the Country from abroad.

Take off your Blinders. What the Hell do you think we have Global Trade For?

All parts of the globe share the benefits of economic activity regardless of where it originates.

Open your eyes...............Leave your Ignorance behind.

Its really quite Simple.....................If I make Money on what I produce here on the Lower Mainland and then in turn spend that money when I go up north fishing in the Summer................................Then suddenly the area I visit becomes a DIRECT BENEFICIARY of the economic activity generated a 1000 miles away.

Money that is made in Whistler FINDS ITS WAY AROUND THE PROVINCE IN EXACTLY the same way.

If I take the Ferry over to the Island...............Suddenly the Island becomes a Direct Beneficiary of the Economic Activity that produced my income on the Lower Mainland.

Dont expect every dollar bill to be identifiable as to origin.

In fact, just the opposite. The games will cost everyone in the province and their grandchildren, a horrendous amount which will make Montral looks like a piker's dream.

Vanoc is screwing the BC taxpayer royally, look at the "deal" Richmond got.
Yup. The only benefit to the ROTP is the taxes that will be gained from the gouging that will proceed. And that's ephemeral at best if not downright ethereal as it's debatable where those taxes will be put to good use.

The only gain there will be is short term and it will benefit a minority of businesses in BC. The gov't will not recover what it spends prior to the Oylmpics for a very long time. That is not a benefit. Tell me how Quebec benefited from the 1976 Olympics when Montreal hosted them? From www.infoplease.com:
Quote:
In 1970, when Montreal was named to host the Summer Olympics '76, organizers estimated it would cost $310 million to stage the Games. However, due to political corruption, mismanagement, labor disputes, inflation and a $100 million outlay for security to prevent another Munich, the final bill came to more than $1.5 billion.
Nice benefit, to be in debt for decades because of it.
Take a look at this: http://www.findarticles.com/p/articl...0/ai_n15705690

So now you are admitting that there will be some wealth created .........but because you consider it the Proceeds of Gouging you consider it Invalid????

Those who paid the Price did so on their own free will.Wether you consider it Gouging or not is immaterial. It is NOT GOUGING when the buyers are Volunteering and lining up to pay.

Gouging or not...................It is New Wealth Created.

Ohhh.........So now you change the Goal Posts again.

You concede there will be Economic Gain BUT NOW YOU TURN IT INTO AN ISSUE as to the ethics of where the money will be Spent.Quite the Turnaround.

Ill remind you that the issue is wether or not there will be economic gain or not......................not the Administration thereof..........that is a separate issue.

If you wanna get into the ethics of the Administration of funds and terms like Gouging....................Im sure we could discuss how the Taxpayer is being gouged in terms of Fire Protection (right up your alley)And other Municipal services............but well leave that for another thread.

So if you wanna bring Gouging into the Equation we should start a thread on the evil nature of Mankind....................and leave Whistler and the Olympics out of it.

Wrong.

Quote:

SOME people pay willingly. SOME people are stuck with the high costs.
Quote:

As are your opinions.
Quote:

Wrong. It is gouging when alongside the tourists who don't know any better what the prices of things are nor care are accompanied by those people who know what the prices SHOULD be but are forced to pay the higher price anyway. If a gas station ups its price of gas by a few cents a liter, sure tourists will gladly pay the price, but for the person who needs to get to work (and may not even like the idea of the Olympics) HAS NO CHOICE but to pay the elevated price.

Yup. But the topic of the thread is about GOUGING.

Apparently my mention of Montreal's Olympics and the economic problems associated with it went right over your head. Few places have had net benefits from the Olympics, Vancouver will be among those that won't have a net benefit. In the meantime, some bisinesses will profit, but the entire province won't.

Go for it.

Gouging is the topic of the thread, putz. I don't have a say on "bringing it into the equation". Guess that went over your head, too.
We could also start a thread on the innate goodness of people, too. So friggin what? IMO, doubtless you should know about evil.

Gain isn't really gain when you are losing. So are you saying there's no difference between net gain and gross gain?
Tourists will have a CHOICE of whether to buy something or not. Some people won't have the choice.

Such as????Specifics??

And just exactly how is that determined?

If one single Business profits.......................it is a profit for the Entire Province and country...................no matter what the Degree.

All the Rhetoric about net losses in other jurisdictions cannot be Proven nor have they been.

Back in post #53 I gave an example. So I'll repeat it, for the literacy challenged among us: if gas stations up the price of gas by a few cents because they want to reap some cashy at the expense of tourists, they aren't just gouging tourists. Poor Joe Lunchbucket going to work and back gets stuck with a higher gas bill and it isn't his choice. Nancy the nurse from Nelson wants to visit someone in Vancouver and needs to rent a room for a few days gets stuck with a higher than usual bill for the room. That's not gouging? I hope not very many people went to the same school as you to learn economics.
One can google up how many places have gained because of the Olympics. THAT's how one can determine whether places have benefited from the Olympics.
If one single business profits from the venture and the people lose, how is that a gain?

How did Montreal gain economically from the Olys? How did Quebec or Canada gain economically from the 1976 Olys? I'm sure there were a couple businesses that gained, but how did anyone else gain by going into debt for decades?

Wow!! Montreal gained a little bit of funny-looking architecture and a couple businesses sold a few knick knacks, aren't they still paying for having the '76 Olys there, though?

For instance, my slow-on-the-intake friend, (going back a few posts to where I pointed it out ) :
( from www.infoplease.com ) I don't really know precisely the actual names of the people that Montreal owed, but I'm sure it's googleable.
Let's see $1.5B minus $310M is a financial LOSS of $1.19 billion. Explain how Canada and Quebec and Montreal benefited economically from that.
