smart people but crappy writers

O.K. That's the last straw!

I have spent the last 6 hours trying to get an apache webserver to recognise a virtual host and I have come to the following conclusions:

Somebody should take the time to re-write the maunal in english.
Lists of commands and directives are pretty useless if the explanations also make no sense.

Linux will never be popular until somebody who can write an explanation in anything but pure geek-speek takes an interest.

Freetranslation.com needs a plug-in for 'open source community' writings.

Ohwee - take a break Jack, always helps - come back 'fresh'.

Half fresh ? ?

Hope you get it, whatever it is - I have a Son I rely on ! ! He looks at me with disdain - that I didn't know it in the first place ! !

That's O.K. too - I use his brain - [which I taught him how to USE in the first place!]

Yes...I quit for awhile then started searching again...the light finally came on but someone should add this particular thing to the docs (like no <directory> directive, no virtual hosting,...need both...)

I have it serving pages locally...now the fun part...DNS

Linux has a pretty steep learning curve. The new RedHat looks pretty slick and the setup is supposed to be easy. Prepare for thick geek-speak ... Windows is simple...linux is FREE.

Actually, it is torture. I am trying to run "Apache" and "Power DNS" and "MySql" all on the same box (finding out this is not ideal ) all open source software on a windows XP box.

I am not re-writing the docs ... write a book and sell it maybe ... everyone whoever tries to set it up should get the joy of it. I went from zero knowledge of webserver and rudimentary 'workgroup' networking to grappling with DNS so I can set up my own VPN and share appications from a central source in just a few days. A few bleary eyed, tear-out-your-hair no-sleep-days.

I am building a LAN. Well, I am teaching myself MSCE stuff because I am bored!

I am just messing around with the OS's to see what they can do. I want to see what I can do with a 'client/server' network topology. I want to serve up apps from a central nexus, understand and deploy a local DNS cache and nameserver and establish my own domain...if that helps

Really I just hate windows ME on this computer and I am desparate to try anything...hey maybe I better go get FreeBSD ...

When I was young and foolish I tried to make nitroglycerin in my basement. Lucky I was young and ignorant and did not know that the reaction requires a catalyst. There is far too much of that around already.

It was only a test tube full...but I did not know that the reaction was exothermic. It is possible that a small amount actually formed but it was to dilute to do anything...there are much more interesting applications for chemistry...

Okay

not familiar with the term "exothermic"..from looking at the word, however.. I would assume you mean explode instead of implode?

It means that the reaction gives off heat. There is a more techinical explanation, something about exothermic reactions are characterised by a reduction of enthalpy of the system. Its been over a decade since I did any chemistry..

It also means that I probably would have blown myself up because I was not cooling the end product.

The funny thing is

I probably know more than a lot of IT pros but hey, its just a hobby! If it was job it might not be fun anymore.

I'm gonna be laughin for days over that one FightforBC!

I came, I saw, I was daunted, I slept, I started again and light dawned and in the end, it is easier to pay for a webhost than to become one .... I got enough to do

I'd feel a lot better about it if I was earning a Network Administrators salary...

Nice to see re-surface Jack and in one piece!

About your last sentence...
Well, look at the number of members at bctalk and imagine, just for one second, that they ALL email you at once...some complaining, some hustling, some way too bright for your own comfort, some way too rude for... same...

Just imagine... what you would feel like at the end of the day!

However, if you ever manage to """"hussshh""" to hook a free ISP "for life" as they used to say... Hey! I need people like 'YOU' under my sleeve... Now, how about building an all-wooden chariot? (with a propeller for uphills?)
